The Biological Threat Reduction Program (BTRP) is a component of the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program. BTRP works collaboratively with both non-government organizations and U.S. Government departments and agencies to help partner regions and countries reduce the threats posed by: the intentional, accidental, or natural spread of pathogens and diseases of security concern; the proliferation of materials, technology, and expertise that could be used in an intentional biological attack; and the potential terrorist acquisition and use of biological weapons. Specifically, BTRP works to improve the disease surveillance capabilities of partner regions and countries, as well as the standards and infrastructure of their biosafety and biosecurity programs. These efforts help partners meet Global Health Security Agenda targets as well as comply with the World Health Organization International Health Regulations and the World Organization for Animal Health reporting requirements.
