Background:
The National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) was established under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Energy in 1983. Since 1991, after the formation of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), BIOTEC has been one of its centers, dedicated to supporting and transferring technology for the advancement of industry, agriculture, natural resources, and the environment, thereby contributing to the national socio-economic welfare.
As a leading research institute in Thailand and Asia, BIOTEC manages research units at Thailand Science Park and specialized laboratories at various Thai universities. Its activities also encompass policy research, outreach programs, training, and international relations.
BIOTEC is pleased to offer an assistance offer under the Article X of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), aimed at enhancing the culture of biosafety and biosecurity through an extensive in-person training course in the Southeast Asia and Pacific regions (encompassing all regional countries).
The training course on biosafety and biosecurity includes theoretical lectures and practical sessions. It will cover biosafety and biosecurity principles, risk management strategies, types of personal protective equipment, waste management procedures, and biological spill response protocols.
Training overall objectives:
- Enhanced implementation of biosecurity programs and practices across the region
- Fulfilment of the States Parties’ obligation under the Biological Weaposn Convention (BWC.
Training topics:
The course will address the following topics in its theoretical sessions:
- International legal frameworks for biosecurity and biosafety
- Fundamentals of biosafety and biosecurity
- Biorisk Management
- Biosafety Practices:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Biosafety Cabinet and Centrifuge
- Pathogen Decontamination
- Pathogen Transportation
- Infectious Waste Management
- Biological Spill Response
The course will address the following topics in its practical sessions:
- Proper procedures for donning and doffing PPE
- Design of biological laboratories and facilities
- Response to biological spills
Selected participants will receive preparatory reading materials before the course begins, along with assignments for the practical sessions.
The preparation and delivery of the course will be upon agreement between the BIOTEC and the requesting State Party and is not less than four weeks.
BIOTEC will welcome the financial support by other States Parties who are interested to sponsor travel, food and accommodation of participants through a voluntary contribution.
