The APHA is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs whose role is to safeguard animal and plant health, animal welfare and public health, protecting the economy and enhancing food security through research, surveillance and inspection.
APHA holds reference laboratory status, both national and international, for a wide range of infectious and non-infectious diseases in farm animals providing a range of veterinary and scientific consultancy to countries across the world and working on behalf of organisations such as the European Community, UN Food & Agriculture Organization, World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organisation. APHA can offer bespoke training (theoretical and/or laboratory based) in many areas relating to animal health including the design of surveillance systems, epidemiology, sample collection and handling, laboratory management systems, safe handling of pathogens in containment and disease specific diagnostics.
