The Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), in partnership with the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), is pleased to announce a short-term (two-month) Fellowship for Scientists in Biosecurity. This Fellowship forms part of the United Kingdom’s offers of assistance in support of Article X of the BWC.
The fellowship is open to nationals of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Applicants should have a background in virology, microbiology, biotechnologies or related biological sciences in the field of human, animal or plant health, and an interest in Dual Use Research of Concern (i.e. infectious diseases, gene editing etc.).
Financial support will be provided for the fellowships and consists of a monthly stipend, the provision of travel expenses from the participant’s home country, medical health insurance, and reimbursement of visa-related expenditures.
The fellowship will take place at ICGEB laboratories in Italy, India, South Africa, and at the ICGEB Regional Research Centre in China. Fellows will receive hands-on training in life sciences and detection and response to biological threats.

States Parties are requested to inform the BWC ISU, by means of a note verbale, of their endorsed nominee(s) for the Fellowship.
The exact start date will depend on the approved project proposal, the fellow’s availability, the hosting laboratory, and the completion of all necessary logistical arrangements, including visa, accommodation, and travel.
